GARAGE GYM HUGE NEWS

Garage Gym is going to open 2012 with a BANG!!

We ended 2011 with an influx of clients signing up for private, semi private and group class....so why not open the new year with another surge!

Ive been hard at work roundtabling, researching and chatting with those in my community and the following program is a MUST for anyone that is finding it tough to find time to workout but is looking for structure, a solid gameplan and guidance.

I've implemented this program with a few clients at Garage Gym and the feedback im gettting is.....YES....THIS PROGRAM IS FOR REAL.

Program Design

As a Program Design client you will have a complete assessment (clients are shocked at what they learn from just this one session) , we will discuss goals and layout a custom based design specifically centered around you smashing your wildest fitness dreams. Its as simple as this... You are given specific workouts to complete (exercises that you understand), small nutrition and lifestyle changes are prescribed, and then you leave Garage Gym and implement changes over the next 6 weeks.
You meet with your trainer every 6 weeks to review results, update training, nutrition and lifestyle prescriptions along with review brand new exercises.

This program is for clients who are looking for direction, and enjoy working out at their own facility and have the toughness to follow basic changes.

Your energy levels will be at an all time high.

You will have all your nutrition questions answered and you will feel the results for yourself.

You will understand why balanced fitness is critical to long term improvement, functional longevity and why just "working out" never works.

We hear clients everyday tell us how confused they've been for years with fitness and nutrition.
They tell us that they never see long term results and they lose motivation easily.
One week they are dancing around their living room with a fitness video.....
The next week they signed up for a 2 year membership at the local gym....
THEN they see a new ab machine on tv and decide to give that a try...

It's a crazy furstrating circle everyone runs in.

And you keep gaining weight.

STOP driving yourself into the ground.

Read a few of our recent testimonials from clients who were skeptical at first but realized they've made a life changing decision.

Coincidentally, my first session with Josh at Garage Gym was November 1st, the day my membership at my former gym expired. I had realized I was wasting my time and money there. I didn't like the feel of the place and I didn't see anyone in that environment I wanted to use as a model for fitness or wellness. Going into my sessions with Josh, I was thinking that I'd need to keep my guard up a little, I was excited to get exposure to the lifts, but I didn't want to risk injury by being pushed to do too much too soon. After 6 weeks of work I trust Josh and his philosophy of balanced strength building completely. He is an amazing coach because he sees me where I am and has a specific plan to get me stronger. Going into 2012 I don't have to make the typical, vague health and lifestyle resolutions, I can instead make specific, achievable goals; 1. Get my first pull-up; 2. Deadlift 200 lbs; 3. Stay the heck off the scale, because that number doesn't matter. I believe that building strength and endurance and paying close attention to the quality of food I eat is the path to overall health and mental balance, and I'm so thankful to have found a community of people who are also striving to get better every day.

I found the Garage Gym blog sometime in the Winter 2010. I added the website to my favorites and would go to it from time to time. I wanted to get into great shape, be strong, and be healthy, but I had too many questions about how, and not enough time or money to make it happen. Summer came and I tried doing this by myself. My wife kept on encouraging me, but it didn't work like it had in the past. I couldn't get motivated and really didn't know where to start. For a while I pretended I knew a lot about fitness and health, but the truth was that I knew nothing. One day my wife saw that I was very frustrated and depressed about my physical body and that it was wearing on me mentally. She suggested I look for a personal trainer and that no matter the cost it would be worth it. I laughed to myself because I had been wanting so bad to find out more about Garage Gym and to meet Josh to see what he could do for me. So I gave him a call and we met and talked about my goals, where I was in life, and where I really wanted to be. It was such a great meeting. Josh was so understanding and encouraging and I wanted to start right away. I couldn't wait to get involved. I was a little nervous at first but that was short lived after I gained some confidence. Josh is very knowledgeable and a great teacher. I have learned so much from him and now have that hunger again to keep learning and gain even more knowledge. I have been a part of the Garage Gym family for about four months and have seen great results, im down 20 lbs and my strength has greatly improved. For the first time in a while, I am very excited and confident about my future. I would highly recommend Garage Gym and Josh Lewis, he cares about me and my goals and knows how to get me to where I want to be. I have learned that this journey is just a part of my life and not just a six month quick fix. My favorite quote from Josh is "A year from now you will wish you had started today". When I read this quote I am so glad I started because I know that in July 2012 (one year from the time I started) I will be in the best shape of my life.

I'm only one person and my schedule is getting busier everyday.

I can only accept 6 clients into the program.

Only 6!

The email I sent out reaches well over 100 people along with another 200 on facebook and 1000+ from those within my community that share it with others.

This is the answer you've been looking for.

Don't flinch like you've done in the past and don't wait until you've dug yourself in a deep hole because that's going to take me much longer to pull you out of.

2012.

The year we transform you.

Regards,

Josh

P.S.
The first 3 people to contact me about this program and attend a free consult will recieve the Garage Gym Comprehensive Grocery Shopping List. Clients are digging this product!!

P.P.S
Have a great New Years!

Avoiding Uncomfortable

Ive been doing some reading and listening to some podcast (rob wolf's guests) over this holiday season and one topic that has caught my attention is how a person can grow mentally and physically stronger through attempting uncomfortable challenges. In todays society our parents and the majority of kids are taught to "be careful" for fear of injury, failure, embarrassment etc... This is ingrained into our heads throughout our life and becomes automatic habit to be careful...afraid of public embarrassment, afraid of failure, afraid of some mental or physical discomfort. "Johnny don't run too fast you may scrap a knee, Susie its too cold to go outside today, Billy you don't have to participate in gym class because its dodge ball season (which they have now banned) and you are afraid of getting a bruise. This fear comes from a part of the brain that helped our ancestors(caveman) stay alive for millions of years. Flight or fight mode. Caveman sees saber tooth tiger, caveman runs or fights. Now it sounds something like this...individual is 30# overweight, cant do a push up and hasn't exercised in years. They understand a better diet, lifestyle and some form of exercise is needed, but they fear change, they fear being told they cant eat a certain food, they fear their family or friends may look at them as weird, they fear FAILURE. They give up before they have tried. This mindset is in all of us. In the book "Flinch" they describe this as "flinching" fearing something that wont actually hurt you but will actually help you through long term growth. Most of what we fear has no serious consequence at all, none. Its just we are told over and over, be careful, don't mess up, don't get embarrassed. Julien Smith, author of the Flinch describes how putting yourself into uncomfortable situations consistently equals growth and improvement because you teach your brain NOTHING IS IMPOSSIBLE and this leads to some huge stuff. It gives you the guts to quit that shitty job, the courage to step inside of that gym and start working out, the courage to stop eating 13 pounds of sugar a year. You attack challenging things with no fear, because you have silenced "The flinch". I have noticed this throughout the years as a competitive athlete and outdoorsman. Moments before stepping out into an event where you have seen 2 hours of athletes prior to you completely and utterly destroyed, makes you want to quit before it even starts. Moments before jumping into an ice bath. Moments before meeting a group of strangers. Moments before jumping into an icy river the first week of may or 100 meters into your 2000 meter row sprint. Moments of saying No to family or friends about eating certain foods or drinking. Once you have silenced that voice and embrace these challenges that MOST avoid, not only do you become stronger physically but most importantly mentally, you have set NO boundaries within yourself, you realize this fear of yours is not really a true life -threatening situation, and its at that moment............ that your life has changed dramatically.

At Garage Gym, you learn to silence the Flinch, you learn to grow through challenges in a controlled, safe environment.

Congrats to my entire Garage Gym community for a huge 2011. You all inspire me on a day to day basis. Your comminttment to improvement, hard work and always having an open mind around learning has been an amazing thing to watch. Welcome to all our new clients who have joined up with Garage Gym at the end of the year, youve joined a strong group of individuals and a knowledge based community that strives for success and happiness.

Welcome to 2012.

Client Email

Recieving emails throughout the day like the one below is why I do what I do.

Josh -

I feel pretty good today. I've lost 14.4 pounds total in 14 days...that's 4 more pounds in the last 5 days. Hooorah!

Here's a better measure....I have moved from 30.3 BMI to 28.3 - Yahoo!!! A couple of more points and I'll be in the normal range once again.

Thank you so much for your help with all of this, really I could not have even begun this without your support/help. Believe me I've tried to change my habits and diet before on many occasions and was only successful once but I put the weight back on. The change in "fuel" has been key for me. The results were so immediate dare I say it makes it easier to stay on track. I'm so excited with the results that passing on even the forbidden foods I LOVE isn't hard. I'm 27% complete toward my weight loss goal. I had set a weight goal - my best wish - of 145. I am willing to move on that depending on muscle growth...it's really about health but for now it's what I have to measure against.

Thanks again for everything, see you Tuesday.

My Personal 2012 Goals

At GG we make all our clients put their goals on paper and we are hanging them up, so they see them everytime they walk into the gym. Goal setting and a vision is so IMPORTANT to reaching anything you are looking to chase.

So its only fair that I disclose my personal goals.

In no specific order as I will accomplish all of them.

1) Get out and flyfish as much as possible with Alicia

2) Live in the present moment

3) Practice yoga 1x per week

4) High bar back squat 350lb (2x bwt)

5) Snatch 200lb

6) Run a sub 5:30 mile

7) Travel to Costa Rica and start learning Spanish

8) This may be considered a business goal but Im putting this as a personal goal as I feel it better fits here.
Create a panel and network of doctors in the local area who are ready to start fixing our health care system, switching to a preventative medicine approach versus "fixing" people that have already broke, through a pill popping strategy. With this panel we will work collabortivley as a group educating each other and groups of other doctors on what we are seeing at our "desks", methods best implemented through nutrition, training and lifestyle modification factors that are helping our clients heal the right way. This process has to start somewhere and Im prepared to fight these battles.
This process offically starts January 3rd right here at Garage Gym.

Performance Board/Challenges...completed

Moving into 2012 I figured would be a great time to put together a list of what I consider important exercises and movements critical to balanced health. I have also put together a list of challenges that will let our clients work towards achieving and over time improving on. This is extremely exciting to me as training with no goals/objectives I feel has its downfalls with most people since the focus isn't on anything specific. The list below are movements that will be posted at the gym and specific percentages with other lifts will be based on your 1 rep max back squat will be accompanied by that.
ie: 1 rep max back squat = 100lbs
your deadlift should be 125
close grip bench press 65 lb
and all 3 scapular raises 8 reps at 6-7 lb etc...

Also the challenges I have set are challenging...some may find it hard to imagine completing such a task but that's why they exist...its a goal, something to chase. Over the next year I will be highlighting a client of the month that have hit specific accomplishments important to their individual goals/plan. With that being said the below exercises and challenges will be based on a clients training age and experience but most importantly their priorities. Ie: Pelvic imbalances, cortisol issues, nutrition fueling issues, body composition, flexibility etc are all categories that WILL BE addressed before clients step up to the bar to lift a 1 rep max on a back squat. AND this will take time for some to establish a baseline in order to complete some of these lifts/challenges....BUT this is the journey and the path needed to achieve balanced health, one thing that's guaranteed though, you will be tested numerous other way showing your progression and improvement. Embrace the challenges and support your fellow athlete/client.

Fueling and sleep

The majority of people looking to achieve their desired fitness/body composition goals look to one avenue to help them achieve that success.

"working out"

Could you imagine being told to not go to the gym all week, take 2- 45 min walks working on deep breathing throughout the week, light stretching, eliminate 2 foods from your diet this week (coaches decision) and to sleep 9 hours.
And within 1-2 weeks you feel AWESOME AND youve lost 5 lbs.
Awesome huh?

Working out is the avenue that is the least important when looking at the other two factors of success.

Hitting the gym 5-6 days a week, 45 min to 1 hour of aerobic based activity (elliptical, running, walking). The thought is the more calories you burn, the more weight you will lose. Calories in = Calories out. Or does it?

Nope

Im here to tell you that the above will not work for ANY of you long-term. There are
people who will lose the quick 5-10 lbs with added activity in their lives, their insulin levels may be partially stabalized due to the increase of activity and the need for glucose as energy while working out, possible more muscle mass consuming more calories, cutting the chances of your insulin spiking after meals (slightly)
BUT this is short term stuff.

Two MAIN factors that NEED TO BE CHANGED slowly is your lifestyle (stress levels and sleeping) and food intake. Without addressing these two areas, your 5 hours a week at your gym, aimlessly training is taking you no where but costing you more $$ out of your pocket and time away from your family and friends.

Clients figure this out on their own here at GG. They realize that eating poorly during the week and attempting to train and progress is severely limited due to "not fueling the machine" as we say here. They connect the two over-time. A client will bonk on a workout and ill ask:what did you eat today? And they name off 3-4 foods, consisting of no protein and fat and around 800 calories and this is at 7:00 at night. WAKE UP!!!! THIS DOESNT WORK!!!
YOU ARE STARVING YOUR BODY, YOUR BRAIN, AND YOUR RESULTS ARE SUFFERING.

Another MAJOR factor is sleep. Most people dont sleep enough, not even close. They make their way to bed around 10:00 PM, totally over stimulated, brain moving at 110 MPH, lights cranking out electrowaves as they sit playing farmville on the computor minutes from going to bed and they stare at the ceiling for the first hour of sleeping. Cortisol levels way out of whack. They may not realize this but they are just sleeping in stage 1, REM (rapid eye movement), this isnt real sleep, your eyes are just closed. No physical or mental repair is happening here and this is bad.
So you wake up at 5AM with maybe 6 hours of sleep, ....to start another day.
This doesnt work.

So what do you do?

Your confused on how to eat, how to sleep and reduce stress levels and are totally lost at the gym.

1) Become aware that this is a problem, if you deny this you are only making this harder on yourself.
2) Become aware when this is happeneing to you ie: when you crawl into bed tonight and your brain is moving constantly, you cant STOP THINKING....yes you'll think of this post probably tonight
3) List on paper some easy steps towards fixing these problems. Ie: dim lights at 7:30 PM and do some light stretching.
4) re-visit these steps weekly and hold yourself accountable for not following through.
5) Realize you are an adult, there is no one else to blame for your problems. You either want to create change or you dont.
6) Become successful long term- understanding the connection between these factors.
7) Help others start to feel better, you'll probably make a few new friends.

I make this list sound a tad easier than it may be for most.

Private coaching is an option that will answer all these questions for you.
No questioning yourself.

If you set the stage for success, you will ultimatley enjoy working out more, and see countless improvements.

Become a success.

3 private training spots left!!

1)Are you going to be one that decides 2012 is the year to make a lasting change?
2)Or are you going to be left on New Years day already fearing going to the gym? Waiting for a few "good" excuses to quit till 2013.

You have that choice...

A nice piece...

Last night I was finishing up the book "The Ledge" and one of the last paragraphs of the book read as follows...

"Surviving Rainier and experiencing the sad loss of Mike and my loved ones, drives home the fact I had better make sure I am living my life well. So I begin to vacation a little more and work a little less. I spend less money on things and more on experiences. I free myself from relationships with unpleasant or untrustworthy people. Each of these refinements has some costs, but they are just minor surcharges to live a life that I can look back on fondly when my journey concludes."

Think about that one today and moving into the New Year...

Are you optimizing your life and physically, mentally and emotionally feeling the best that you can?
Are you setting the stage to a larger more fulfilling life??

Balance- and its importance..

Fact:
Heart
The hardest working muscle is the heart. It pumps out 2 ounces (71 grams) of blood at every heartbeat. Daily the heart pumps at least 2,500 gallons (9,450 liters) of blood. The heart has the ability to beat over 3 billion times in a person’s life.
Isnt this one muscle you want strong and healthy?

Moving into this new year I am on a mission to create balanced healthy individuals within the sport of fitness and educate them on what exactly that means. balanced %'s with running, rowing, weightlifting, mind, body and spirit. I have been hard at work coming up with what I call a balance sheet for your rowing and running times. Ie: Your 500m row is 1:35, your 2k based on being balanced should be 7:40 etc.. The final touches are being put on those formulas currently. The weightlifting numbers are done, courtesy of my coach and will be revealed to clients soon. Ie: 1 rep max back squat is 100lb, your deadlift should be 125lbs.
I am in the process of designing 3 anaerobic testers and 3 aerobic testers for all 4 groups at GG. Male 18-40, male 40+, female 18-40, female 40+.
The importance behind this is to establish benchmarks with clients.
Ie: ANG tester for a male 18-40
max reps
1 min of burpees
2 min of kettlebell swings at 70#
3 min of double unders.

Client X completed 140 reps last year at this time and they just re-tested at 165 reps one year later... Improvement? The numbers prove themselves.

This will also make training "fun". This gives a clear vision on proper energy system testing, balance and progression. Without that, you are training with no purpose and just crushing 10 min AMRAPS with no goal in mind.

Creating balance with your training percentages, mind and spirit gives us the tools to do anything we want in this life. (Big picture stuff). Staying dedicated to a training program, eating clean and setting goals all leads to larger avenues. If You cant take care of yourself, I would argue that you are not at full potential in other areas of your life. (job, home life, etc)

Congrats to all my fellow competitors who crushed the Construction Series #2 this past weekend, great events, a true test.

Garage Gym wants to congratulate Erik Q for hitting a 70lb weighted chinup at a bodyweight of 165. 5 months ago Erik completed 3 pullups with his BWT. Improvement?

I recieved an email from Erik a few weeks ago letting me know when his board exams where for his medical profession and he was concerned about missing workouts and let me know when he could make up his workouts. Erik is a classic example of a client who is dedicated, even when stuff gets busy and crazy in his life. He works a full-time job, studys for this boards and trains 4x a week while eating healthy. No excuses.

I want to recognize a few clients on last weeks success'
1) My Dad- completing 6 pullups in 3 min. 2 months ago = 0 pullups
2) My Mom for hitting a tabata situp (4 set) low score of 9, excellent
3) David has been with me since feb and has decided to double his training sessions at GG to take his results and training to another level.
4) Want to welcome Randy I to our community, young guy, great attitude, huge potential.
5) Justin B and Jess- Growth, weekly...awesome
6) Alex, Matt, John, Russ, Ben, Erik, Anthony...a small number of my underground firebreathers...keep killing it in your training caves...your hard work will pay off Jan 21st.

We are down to 3 private training slots available.

Monsters part II

So we had 2 clients perform a testing workout today.
Matt T and Alex F, hammered an aerobic based metcon, outstanding results.

Joe W hit a score of 101 for 5 min on 300FY
His wife jessica hit a PR deadlift of 100lbs x 10 reps also.

Great night. Competition, and energy is growing daily here.

Do you understand your training priorities based on a proper assessment and plan? Are you training the right energy systems for your body type and training age?
Is energy system training even a correct prescription for you?
Are you balanced in terms of strength?

These questions need to be answered frequently or you are just training to train with no direction or clue what you are doing.

This is important stuff. We will continue to breed monsters of all ages and experience, stay tuned for more performances.

DO NOT PASS THIS UP

The New Year is approaching and we all know what that means?

Everyone will be setting new and improved health and fitness goals!

And 90% of you will not make it past the end of Febuary at your current gym.

Frustrated, dissappointed, and confused.

We all know this is true, this is why Garage Gym is extending its hand out to all of you.

If you are not putting your health and well-being as a priority then this email/post probably will not be for you.

Garage Gym is accepting 6 new private clients for the month of December, thats it!

Keep reading how you can become one of those 6 lucky clients that have an opportunity to never look back on your current health and fitness levels.

Why have we grown at a rapid pace since opening?

1) Client experience and the knowledge they take home with them that will last them a lifetime.

2) Relationship with GG- EVERYONE needs accountabilty, goals and structure in order to improve their health and fitness levels. I have a coach that I work with on a weekly basis helping me become better and he has a coach helping him become better...its what it takes to self improve and keep progressing. When you are not improving, you are frustrated and we all know what happens when frustration sets in...zero motivation.

3) RESULTS - Ask any one of our clients what they enjoy most here at GG (I'll personally give you contacts to reach out to). You will hear them say that their strength levels have increased, they have a solid understanding of what to do at the gym when they are not at GG, they don't question themselves on what is "right" or "wrong" to eat, they just know what needs to be done. There is no guessing here at GG, every client is held accountable and re-assessment results speak for themselves.

We are accepting 6 new private clients for the month of December that will work exclusively with me, 1-1. I personally guarantee your success. Is this a 30-60 day cookie cutter program? Nope, this is reality and the reality is it takes time to make change and develop habits.

There are 2 kinds of people

1) Ready to stop talking and get to work transforming yourself into the healthy strong individual you've always wanted to be

2) Your still filled with fear, doubt and excuses.

I can only help those that are willing to help themselves. We want courageous clients. The definition of courageous is "doing the thing even though you feel the fear".
We are looking for those people.

You have a choice this upcoming year, a choice to make 2012 a year that you accomplished and exceeded all your health and fitness goals.

Separate yourself from those stuck in a rut, complaining about never seeing results even though they are at the gym 7 days a week on the same treadmill, confused and beat up over why they gain 10 lbs a year and they "worked out" 360 days out of the year and ate a low fat diet.

Our referral program has given NUMEROUS clients free months of PRIVATE TRAINING. Our referral program is built on the notion that I want our current clients to get results for as cheap as possible, while I build my business into an empire that pumps out success stories.

We are currently working on a new client package that will include the following EXCLUSIVELY for GG clients.
Oil Change Discounts
Organic meat, eggs and vegetables discount
Barber and Salon discounts
Massage discounts
Discounted yoga classes
Fitness store discounts

Thats right, not only are you seeing great results, becoming knowledgable about what "works" and are getting all my secrets that will stay with you for a lifetime, you are saving on numerous other services that we all know add up over time.

One final time...this email/post is reaching out to hundreds of Garage Gym Friends...we are ONLY accepting 6 new clients for December.
We are quickly approaching our limit with what we can handle for a client base. You DO NOT want to be on a waiting list.

Its impossible for me to say when there will be additional slots opening up.

Become a success story. Become a Garage Gym Exclusive Private Client.

No more guessing.

No more confusion.

Only results.

Regards,

Josh

An important note...

A note from my Coachs- James and Mike

December is here - so a reminder to everyone; its the time of the year where the flame burns a little less in the AM and the days are a little shorter - well for most of us in the northern hemisphere; so its a time to count your blessings and be grateful to have a plan and direction in your goals for the new year.
Its not a time to give in to the winters doldrums. Reflect on what you have and can have and be patient, the sun will rise again, and soon it will be longer in the sky per day onward. Don't allow a little slump or perceived "lack of" get you down, breathe once, twice, three times slowly and get back at it, forward facing - onward!
