STRONG

Written by David Schlesselman, fellow training partner and OPT Big Dawg.

I know you...
I know you're bigger, faster and stronger than me.
I know your Fran time is lower, your 5k is quicker and your deadlift is heavier.
I know you have 1,000 views on YouTube.
I know you're a "WOD" warrior.

I know you, but you don't know me.

You don't know what's in my head, ...what's in my heart, what's in my soul.
You don't know that pain is my ally.
You don't know that sweat and blood are my training partners.
You don't know that I'm unbreakable.

I know you train in your temperature controlled gym with the tough sounding name while I'm training in garage exposed to the elements. In the heat and in the cold, in the humidity, rain and snow, I'm forging mental toughness. I'm tempering my resolve. I'm fueling my passion. I'm getting ready for the day that we meet.

I know your 1,000 YouTube views won't mean shit in front of 1,000 spectators. I know when the heat goes up I go big and you go home.

I know you don't know me...but you will.

Hi I'm Bill....a runner....

-Picture from http://www.optimumperformancetraining.blogspot.com/

Another new client came through the doors of OPT this morning. Ann, a client of mine for 6 weeks now, brought her boyfriend Bill with her to join in on the fun.
Bill is a runner, a kayaker and goes to a globogym once in awhile.

Bills' OPT WELCOME WORKOUT...

-21 thrusters with 15lb Dumbells
-30 anchored situps
-30 24 inch box step-ups (Ann 20 inch)
-35 DB swings with 15lb DB (Ann 25lb)
-25 pushup burpees
Time 9:11

Ann: 8:02

When Bill finished his workout he had a look of shock on his face. Eyes wide open, gasping for air. Bill just experienced Crossfit and the feeling of true functional training at high intensity. When Bill hit his 13th thruster his breathing increased quickly and he realized this is no joke. When the dust settled, soaked in sweat, he said he normally doesnt sweat at a globogym and is bored with his normal routine. "I'm definatley liking Crossfit now"

Welcome to OPT Bill.

The below is written by Rainier Crossfit
This holds true for all Crossfitters...

I believe CrossFit is about people and relationships. Fitness comes as a result of having great people and solid relationships in a place where the right tools are available. A gym without great people is simply a room full of weights.

I believe CrossFit selects for great people. A co-worker once wondered how a guy he knew got a ride to a distant city overnight. He said he didn’t think any of his friends would do that for him. Our response: we have a gym full of friends who wouldn’t hesitate AND they’d even buy coffee for the trip

I believe you can tell a lot about a person by how they approach the bar. Confident. Questioning. Unsure. Determined. Reckless. Cautious.

I believe you can tell even more about that person when they leave the bar. Exuberant. Angry. Self depreciating. Impressed. Proud. Contemplative.

I believe burpees were designed by the same guy who invented pantyhose.

I believe getting your diet nailed down is the hardest thing you’ll ever do. And you’ll have to do it everyday. Somedays it will be easy to make good food choices, other days it will seem impossible. It comes down to how important it is to you. If its important enough, you’ll do it and the benefits will pay in spades.

I believe we have a duty to our kids. I have a responsibility to raise them in an environment where food is fuel and not celebration, a cure for the pity pool, or something to turn to in boredom. In other words, I have to know that my view of food is all screwed up and I have to instill in my kids something different.

On the topic of kids, I believe they need to grow up knowing exercise if fun, rewarding, and its an enjoyable pursuit for life. Luckily, they get to grow up in a CrossFit gym where they are surrounded by great people, heavy weights, PR’s and all of the makings of a positive, welcoming, healthy environment.

The best gift we’ve ever received was a card that simply said “Thank You for saving my life”

Lastly, I believe in family. My family is just a little bigger these days.

Crossfitters, pat yourself on the back, we are a family...continuously growing, be proud you sweat, bleed and are stronger than your friends. Smile when others pick on why you eat and how you train....they will never understand...meanwhile we will continue to produce fit, healthy strong athletes....this is what we do.

Classes at OPT....

First off..check this out
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HpXPCJUC2Kw&feature=PlayList&p=2A6C2A3C4464B58E&playnext=1&playnext_from=PL&index=17

is this fitness? I laughed pretty hard....ok back to reality....

I just returned from Toronto ON after attending a Level 1 Crossfit Training Certification. It was a great experience. I have been crossfitting and competing for over 4 years and I am looking forward to bringing my experiences and coaching abilities to the Oneida NY area.

I have lots of people asking me questions on the opening of Optimum Performance Training...
1) What is it?
A. We are a gym that works out of a garage...yes garage...we train anyone that is looking to get FIT, and wants to work hard...we have group classes, and one on one training. Our clients are all ages and fitness levels.

2) What are classes like?
A. We start with a 15-20 min warmup that gets your blood flowing, many of our clients say they work harder in our warmup then they did for their entire workout at their Globogym. Then we move onto the workout of the day (WOD). Workouts are functional, we jump, climb, press, pull, throw, squat, and push. Our movements prepare you for LIFE, our movements mimic those that are done in your EVERYDAY life. Our workouts are not done on MACHINES, and we have no mirrors. We use dumbells, barbells, and our bodyweight. After our WOD we cool down and/or work on some technique work regarding a specific movement.

3) I've never weightlifted, can I still come to OPT?
A. We train athletes of all skill levels. A large majority of our clients have no background in fitness, they are your everyday mothers and fathers, students and grandparents that just want to get fit, and want to avoid becoming weak, diseased and helpless.

4) I've belonged to a Globogym for years and havent seen good results, why?
A. Globogyms want their members to sign up and since they have HUNDREDS of members they DO NOT care if you go, their business is based on membership numbers and not based on the success of their clients. At OPT our clients sweat, they are coached on eating properly and they are driven to succeed. We call clients if they do not show up, and we question their poor eating decisions. We care about our athletes and our results show that.

Recovery....

Crossfit is hard...your body takes a beating everytime you workout...you need to learn how to recover properly or else your performance will lack and you will be more injury prone. Keys to recovery...

1) Proper diet. A diet low in starchy foods, no refined carbs and no sugar. These 3 foods are a disaster to recovery, they promote high levels of inflamation.

2) Sleep as much as you can, minimum 8 hours a night. Start to wind down at least 1 hour before bed. Dark cold room.

3) Control your stress.

4) Proper amounts of DHA/EPA Pure Omega 3 Fish Oil

5) Foam rolling, PNF stretching, active release therapy

6) Proper cool down after workout

7) Proper warmup

8) No alcohol, thats obvious

Start with those and see if your body recovers quicker after workouts.... i bet you will see an improvement with your intensity also....
